its a nice tank, but you're still wasting a lot of electricity.
Well now that's a whole different argument. So I'm guessing 10,000k bulbs are fine now? Or are you saying I'm wasting electricity by not running 6700k bulbs? By the way, most of the time I only ran two bulbs :)

ok bud whatever you say

Sorry for the lack of pictures. I've been sooo busy lately. We had a bunch of family come to visit from out of state and then as soon as they left I found out that I'm pregnant! But things seem to be calming down now and I'm going to try really hard to get some up this weekend. I am already haveing an issue with algae so I'm probably going to move the tank. Plus it's kinda hard to mess with since it's high up on top of my desk. I just have to figure out where I'm going to move it to. But I ended up getting 6 guppys, 3 long fin danios, 1 bristle nose pleco and 3 amano shrimp.

I love this tank, even though it's kind of a mess right now what with all the algae. it's so fun to watch. I think I may now be addicted to shrimp they are so neat!

Sorry to butt in, but could someone list any/all types of substrates that are acceptable for planted tanks? I know poeple buy flourite and eco complete etc, but lets say you have regular play sand, anything you can do to help this out? ANything you can mix with it?

You could mix any type of substrate with playsand if you wanted too.
My experience with playsand is mixed...
I started my 55g as a low tech "Test" tank to see if I could handle the planted tank scene. Turned out I could and 1G later I'm done buying the equips, but I'm left with the playsand.
While it can grow plants pretty well, I HATE IT. you can see every little piece of crap from my pleco and you cannot pull plants without stirring up debris I would advise against it at all costs.
Not because it is bad for growing plants quite the contrary it is very good, but because you can hardly do maintenance with playsand.

I see what you mean. I saw someone mention some top soil that they added to sand. I was wondering about that. I know there is substrates already made. But lets say you have play sand, what stuff could you add to it to give it some help to be able to grow easy plants. Like lets say you screwed up and used the play sand already. It would be a pain in the butt to remove it all and add a substrate like eco complete or flourite. So I was wondering if you left the play sand, what are your options with trying to make it suitable for plants.

how bout mixing it with a bag planted tank substrate and "dilute" it? that way you still get some nutrients. i mixed flourite black with play sand i loved how it looked

Yeah thats what I was thinking about doing. But I didnt know if it really is effective as far as helping plants. Did it work out well? Could easy plants grow ok with that sorta mixture?

not sure, i didnt use it for plants lol
