most of the bacteria is in the media in your filter(s) anyways. i have both right now but i definitely prefer bb.
Yes MOST,but when you have a 48x18"footprint with 4" of substrate, then you have major additional colonies.........

i tried BB for awhile, i didn't like seeing where the tank is siliconed. now i only use BB on my FH tanks (i spraypaint the bottoms black)

I recently (last weekend) changed my 55's decor and removed all the gravel. There was a bit of gunk in the gravel but only under thing that hadn't been moved in a while (rocks and stuff). I can see why people like BB tanks as when I did a water change 100% of the mess on the bottom was removed quickly and easily. BUT, I now only 1 week later have gravel in my tank and have decieded that I only like BB tanks for Hospital and Quarantine tanks, it just doesn't look appealling to me.

Also I use sand and gravel mixed in my 220 with Oscars and have no problem with sand destroying my external filters.

This is my tank now.

i dont know man if you need the bacteria off your substrate i think you should just be running more filters with biomedia anyways. i've always looked at the bacteria on decor/substrate/whatever to be more like an added thing, not a critical component of filtering a tank
