Bare Bottom Planted Tank Ideas?

What kind of fish are you keeping?

You should look into ripariums. It's basically an open top tank with plants grown hydroponically on a sort of shelf right at the water's surface. A lot of the hardware is made from sponge and foam, so your fish shouldn't be able to hurt itself.

I added another anubias and a java fern mat. The mat floats around right now but I'm sure it'll settle down once it soaks up some water.

What about a black foam background? Or a cork background? Anubias, Java fern, Bolbitis, and any mosses will cling to it and it should be less harmful to run into than rock or driftwood. You could even form little pockets to stuff soil into so that you could grow some other small root plants.
