Most fish actually try to match the shade of their substrate. Almost every fish I've ever had has changed in some way over various substrate types. For example, I've had Venezuelan green cory cats, over both black sand, and typical tan sand. They were a much better and brighter green color over the tan than the black. Over the black they were almost blue in color.
