Bare bottom tanks

Does having a bare bottom tank affect the quality of the water?
 
i imagine that not have any gravel to "hold" the particles from floating in the water, would just cause your filter to grab them.

on a side note everytime i've seen fish in a "bottomless tank" they seem to try to swin downward at a 45degree angle because there is no floor.
 
It affects the quality of the water indirectly by not having as much beneficial bacteria. Less BB = slower ammonia and nitrite breakdown. Most people with bare bottom tanks now this though and either stock lightly or make up the BB in a sump or in other ways.

if you have heavily filteration you should be fine...but have gravel is good. most bacteria will stay in your gravel, more the filter.
