Bare bottom tanks

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i currently have bare bottom tank with 2 fx5 with full loaded of media and foarm in there.

if you have a wetdry or some other form of filtration other than a UGF having a bare bottom IMO would only make the water cleaner with no gravel to trap poop. If my new tank didnt have a extra 2" color of glass on the bottom edge I would think about going bare bottom. Paint the bottom glass black so no funny swimming fish. ONly down side I could think of is alge growth...but that isnt really a down side....

wouldn't the BB ony stay in the top layer of gravel since no water is drawn through it to bring o2? If you have other means of bio filtration gravel wouldn't make a difference IMO.

From what I have gathered through reading, is that gravel does harbor BB, but not necessarily enough to make a noticable difference in the tank paramenters. But then again, I have always overdone the bio filtration just to be sure in my barebottom aquariums.

I just put gravel in my BB tank. I could not keep the ammonia down or the ph up. It's a 30 gl. with a huge sponge filter and a magnum hot. What a pain that was. Even with daily water changes, I just couldn't keep it stable. :irked:
