I prefer to have the black sand in rather than barebottom. TGM is right when he says they like to dig through the sand. Another benefit of having sand in is if you put in some smaller foods (like blackworms, bloodworms or small pellets), the sand keeps it in one place long enough for the bichirs to find it. When I had a barebottom tank, the current would blow it away pretty quick and they had trouble getting to the food since they like to smell the food for a couple seconds before biting into it. I just put in a thin layer (1/2") and that helps keep the tank cleaner but also helps food stay down long enough for them to get at it.
