Barn Owl Care

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I doubt that very much. It really has ALOT to do with how much space, time, resources (places to buy feed and other things needed by owl, and a good vet, which see's to exotic animals, which yes, I have an excellent one close) and money. The constant feeding of the owl is VERY expensive. I'm trying to find exactly how much adults feed, so I can try work out average price its going to cost me to feed it, I wont be able to buy if its out of my league with feeding obviously. But yeah, I know a couple who keep owls (the breeder perhaps?) its like the other post, about what animals should and should not be kept, I posted what I thought there but its only my opinion. My dad kept a few birds when he was much younger, a hawk was his best, and as far as I know he did fine, but there again he had lots and lots of land. Obviously I'm going to be slightly biased because I want to keep one, but I'm not one to put aside animals welfare before I can keep it. If I dont think I can house it; I dont buy. Simple as. I also think, its a lot different for different places, the UK is far different for animals than say the USA. Davo, I'm still looking up mate, I was trying to fix itunes last night lmao so Didnt get to search much, but I will today, and yeah snakes are WICKED! I'm so thankful I never had a natural fear of them yano, otherwise I wouldnt be able to keep something so great!

Lol. Why do you think they would be expensive to feed? Would you have to feed them other things than mice?

Because they eat alot, and for a 16 year old, buying frozen food is expensive ontop of the other reptiles and fish you have to buy for.. They do eat alot and its just the fact they eat alot. I soppose to somebody abit older who has a good job etc its not that expensive but it is for me at the moment. Yeah you'd have to feed them other things than mice :)

What else do they eat? Have you ever thought about breeding your own food stuffs like mice (i know you have snakes too). Very cost effective. When you can cut your costs from 200 quid for frozen, to 20 quid for bedding and feed... cost effective. 4 sets of 1.4 will produce you almost 200 feeders a month. That is if you get a good strain of mice/rats that have larger litters. I suppose how you like the idea of killing them yourself, CO2 isnt that bad.

Chicks when theyre bigger, and beef cuts as babies too. I dunno, Not sure if i could kill them really, I'm a big softie at heart I soppose!

You could breed quail or similar. I guess that would be worse to you. Interesting diet, i would have thought that most of their wild diet would consist of pretty much just rodents or maybe young rabbits and the sort.

They mostly eat voles in the wild, but their not in the wild anymore so parents are fed and the next best thing really. Chicks are a good substitute for owls.

what about things like african pygmy mice. Not sure if people can keep voles, a lot of species tend to die of shock unfortunately. I would have thought other rodents would be closer to their staple than chicks. Then again I dont keep owls :D :D

Just breed your own... that $50 CAD a week for daily feeding for a large snake collection that I observed one time can be reduced to $5 CAD a month -- which is basically feeding and watering.

I never really had a problem with killing them... except for pinkies. There is no two-way to go about killing pinkies, flick them at the back of their head; it is not cost-effective to C02 the pinkies. Just toss the excessive population into a large bin and use one of those paintball canister ($3 a refill) for about 10 minutes. Then whip out your vacuum sealer and prepare them individually so you have a nice stock for the next 6 months. If you have more than you need, then sell them to your local pet store or give them to a friend.

You don't have to look at them. Think about this way -- for every meat you eat, a mouse die for snakes and owls right?

Going prekilled is the only way right -- seeing it is illegal to do live feeding in the UK apperently?
