ei guys,

i dont know much about barracudas(freshwater)

so i got questions.

i hope you can help.

what barracuda can fit in for my 85gal tank.

how many ?

whats a good tankmate? or not

tnx guys

I reccomend keeping a species tank (only one type of fish) if you are interested in the freshwater barracuda. The only type i know of is the hujeta (Hujeta Characin, Ctenolucius Hujeta, etc, etc. It's all the same stuff.) These grow to be 28 inches long, and most reccomend a tank size of at least 135 gallons. If you would like to take a chance, however, I have also heard that if you start them off in a smaller tank (Your 85-gallon will do fine here) they will stay smaller, at around 10 inches. At this size, you could easily keep two or three in your aquarium.

Anything under 125 gallons will create a very sketchy barracuda and stresses the lil guy (125g. still on edge for adult). These fish attack with lightning speed and will injure themselves without room to slow down. Respect the fish by giving it plenty of room to stretch and you'll be able to experience to true nature of the beast. This pertains to the Ace Barracuda's not hujeta(pic below)

maybe a paraya scomb thingy, they only get to be about 12in max.

The pic is a red tail barracuda. I have a hujeta and love him.

Which ones grow to 28" got any pics? biggest I have seen a pic of was maybe 10"

You could get 2 or 3 cudas for an 85 as long as the environment is right and they wont be startled all the time, cuz thats where the problems come. In a high traffic area i wouldnt do it. They might not be as active as they would in a massive tank but they would be fine (ive had fairly big cudas in a 30 for a while before with no problems- would never do it again tho, kinda mean).....As for tank mates, ive had success with hujetas, 2-3 inch pictus catfish (tough, cheap little fish that can hold its own and is left alone be even my 8 inch pike when it hasnt eaten in a week and the pictus has taken over its cave....lol) and pike chichlids (CAUTION!)...pikes are very aggressive and it can present big problems for cudas if the pikes aggression isnt handled properly. But pretty much any non aggressive fish that is at least 2/3rds the cudas size will be fine with them. Hope that helps alittle.

I had a friend who sold his for $75 a while ago. The guy who bought it was really picky, and wanted an exact measurement of it. My friend called me over, and he took the fish out by hand (seemed like a dumb idea to me, but he thought it would be ok) while i quickly measured it with a tape measure. It was exactly 23" long. That's the biggest i've ever seen, but most of the stuff i've read says they can get to be 28-32 inches long.

Hope you enjoy my little anecdote. :D
