The male is about 4", female 3".
The tank is normally kept relatively dark, so I don't notice the green until I look at the shots, it probably is brought out by the flash.
I also started using a macro ring lens on the last few shots to try and get better detail on the fry, and it tends to bring out colors I don't see with normal light.
Fry @ 10 days free swimming.
a shot of a male that didn't meet the females standards, he had to be removed to save his like from the fry guarding parents.
Left him in for a while to help cement the pair bond, but he was starting to lose too many scales as the fry started to spread out in the tank.
I got them about a year ago, they were @1" give or take, at the time.
Below is a pic taken just after I first got them, at last springs Memorial Day gcca cichlid (Greater Chicago Cichlid Association) classic auction.
I have kept them at fairly cool temps over the winter, low 70sF, and feed low protein spirulina foods, so growth rate for me, may be slower than others may experience. I prefer fish to grow at normal rates as opposed to forcing growth with high temps and gut loading. Just a personal preference, because in my opinion it seems to lower aggression levels, allowing females a better chance at growing to maturity, and keeps pathogenic bacteria levels in check.
