hi all.

want to one day build a pond in my basement.

i read somewhere that a 9x14 pond is sufficient because of the costs that would incur if you go beyond those dimensions as for medicating and filtering etc. comments? the pond would be made out of concrete and most of the way in the floor so it would be easily viewable.

there will be a dehumidifier unit for it, but is there a way to have a quiet filter?

say the pond was 9x14, what would be a good stocking number for that?

thanks

nitro

A large W/D filter can be very quiet (mainly the pump motor noise).

If you don't over-stock the pond you can have lower turnover rate and a slower filter.

You didn't state how deep it is going to be or what kind of fish you want/like.

4 feet deep? or should i go deeper for temperature reasons?

thanks

Are you still going to do the shed pond?

Meds. will be cheaper if you treat the fish in another tank, say a 74 or 100 gal. stock pond from Menards.

i might be nixing the shed pond because then i would not have to put up an 80' by 40' shed, and in the winter i wouldnt have to go outside.

Do you plan on adding any heat?

Insulate the pond on all sides and bottom.

4ft is good, 5ft would just be adding water.

How deep is the ground water?

What's the frost line?

how would i go about insulating the inside of my foundation?

question 1 and 2, unknown yet. but i dont think that it would be close to being near ground water. would an above the foundation/basement floor pond be a better idea? id have to do some viewing windows if that were the case. can be done.

If it is just Koi I don't see a need for a heater at all. The inside of your basement will probally be around 70 deg.which will be just fine for them.

i wasnt going to heat the pond, but i havent heard things being taken into account like frost line and ground water level.... i just figured i just say hey i want one here and there it is. (of course with proper aeration and filtration)

Frost line and water table only pertain to dug, outdoor ponds. If you already have a basement, the water table was low enough, or else no basement. Were you thinking concrete blocks or forms to make the walls?
