How do you go about preparing the wood for the tank? I have a bunch of oak branches but was kind of afraid to put them in the tank.

I just soak and clean them in hot water. You may get some white growth start to develop after a few days, but this can appear on any type of wood. The growth is completely harmless and sometimes the fish will nibble on it.
