Basic Water Pump Q's

I just got my hood back on and finally got my filter underneath it. I took a pic so everyone can see what I'm working with

...you might also notice the chip at the top of my filter, I had it near the hood while I was painting, lost my balance, and judo kicked the top of the filter :irked:

Drilling your tank consists of aquiring a DIAMOND dusted Hole saw of the correct size, and clay ring to put on the glass to start the holesaw and to keep water on the diamond cutting surface. A drill with variable speed. (diamond holesaw= Slow RPM)
About 15 minutes a hole, on 3/8ths inch thick glass...peice of cake...

Then all you'll need is the Bulkhead fittings. They screw together, sandwiching the glass between them and with an "o-ring" seals watertight. Risers are slip-fit into the Bulkhead fittings (PVC) The hoses to get the water to and from the Sump...then you're all set...

After looking at the bulkhead slip ring more, I'm actually pretty interested in this now, How exactly does the hole cutting process work?

Wow it took me long enough to find this I know sorry for the delay...
Here ya go this will give you an idea, E-bay has a "dusted diamond dealer" from HongKong, really inexpensive for the bits (they used to anyway)http://www.northcoastmarines.com/bulkhead_fittings.htm#glass_drill ;)
 
Talk with the local glass company or your lfs they might be able to drill the tank for you usually 20 bucks a hole, the bits are quite expensive for just one job and are worth doing profesionally that way your not liable if it gets screwed up to. Trust me its worth drilling the tank just get it done by someone else. Great set up tho, I am quite jelous!

I have actually been thinking about this for the past couple of hours, I think since this is my first tank and I'm moving everything within a year, I may just wait untill I am more experienced before I try this, or at least untill after the move when my tank will be in a permanent place. I added the link as a favorite and Im definetly interested in doing this later :cool-1:
 
I quess I'll bring the possible bad news... Do you know if the tank bottom is tempered glass or not? If it's tempered most places won't touch it..Most say tempered glass can't be drilled or cut (99.8% of the time their right too). If it isn't tempered and you want to try drilling go buy a piece of glass the same thickness and practice...practice ...practice. It is a hole saw you will be using. You can make a guide out of a 2"x4"x12" piece of wood. In it you pre-drill guide holes the same size and distance apart as what is going to be on the tank. Then you double face tape the guide with holes on the bottom of the tank (turn tank up-side down) get someone to trickle water on the hole saw at a steady rate. Using a variable speed drill on its slower setting, keep the drill vertical (perpendicular to glass) and DO NOT APPLY FORCE, the weight of the drill is more than enough. Let the hole saw do the work. The water works as a lubricant, removes the glass particles and removes the heat build-up caused by the drilling. If you have a drill press that you can manuver around the tank, all the better. Harbor freight sells one for $40 that could be a good investment and on the plus side you get a new power tool!
It's kinda fun to do, but first...Practice...Practice...Practice!

Otherwise you have to load up the tank and transport it to your glass cutter place-person.
