I have personally done the combination before. The gar was growing way too fast as I expected. It was growing close to an inch a week. I starved it so the bass could keep up and he started eating pellet. I bought it at 6 inches and it was 12 inches in two months. I gave him to the friend as soon as I started seeing teeth marks on the bass that I had. If you want a gar, go for a smaller growing gar. That gar will need a pond within a year and a half because they do not turn well in tanks.
What were u feeding your gar?

In my 180g tank currently have 6 bass(size range from 6"-15"),2 folrida gar and 2 gator gar(15"size). my smallest bass already have scratches and teeth mark on his body. the gator gar are very aggrasive and growth rate is very fast. after few months your orino will have a problem with gator gar. my gator is now fed on live feeder and hikari jumbo carnistick. if you starved them they will eat whatever that can fit in their mouth. IMO dont put them in a same tank unless your orino are large enough.
The gar will eat or kill your bass.
