bat air pumps are OK but they don't stop your filters dieing

i used to have a UPS which was great but had to move it out to make more room for filters

i now have a generator in my garage best be safe than sorry for the sake of $80 get a generator

Man we got hit by that ice storm but only lost power for like 5 days. Some people didn't get power back until Christmas day. Anyway after I lost all my fish except the cory cat I read up on things to do to prepare.

Make sure you have heavy blankets, I read the emergency heat/ice blankets could work
battery operated air pumps
Heat packs
Source to boil water
Bags for the water

The article I read said to skip feeding since the filters will be off. To keep the tank closed and let the battery operated air pumps do their work. To monitor the temp in the tanks. Wrap the tanks in blankets to keep what heat is there already in. And when the temp starts to drop you can either tape the heat packs around the outside of the tank and wrap the blankets back around it or you can float bags of hot water. We have a small propane camping stove that we can use to do this.

Unfortunately we were not prepaired and we lost nearly all our fish. Maybe one day I can afford a generator.

If you're gonna invest in a generator, best bet is to spend the money and get a good one. I don't necessarily mean top of the line ot anything, but definitely get a decent honda generator. I personally wouldn't trust an 80 dollar generator. But that's me.
At the same time. Even a cheap generator is better than no generator. At least untill it breaks down.

We do not have to cope a lot with power outages in Europe. But day before yesterday we had one for 4 hours...I was stressed as hell!!!

You must have been quite twitchy all those four hours. I had a black out couple of days ago (my maid called me) and i have not yet installed the car batteries as i always planned. I DID have AC/DC automatic switch over pumps in each aro tank with two sponge filters each. It was quite an unpleasenat ten minutes.

I am hooking up car batteries with alternators for submersible pumps soon AND getting a compressed air tanks for super emergency to add to safety.

nothing is better then a gen but vortech wave makers are decent u can connect to battery back up which auto go onto batteries if theres no power 1 3000 gal n hour with 1 battery back up lasts 30 hours also has it own triclke charger so your always set get 2 batteries and your set for 60+ hours
