Battle of the pseudocanthicus

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I know what courting looks like i have spawned a few plecos in the past but NOBODY has spawned pseudocanthicus, thus nobody has witnessed it. even if they did spawn and create a hybrid who wouldn't want one!! hybrid or not its a feat in its self. more then likely it is aggression but being the scarlet is being so submissive i cannot rule out courting:D

i will be starting a few plecos breeding ponds of 1000gals or more by summers end. i will have plenty more adults shipped in of a few variants to get this on its way.

i have been researching and reading and researching and reading as much as possible and have been in contact with a few exporters out of Brazil that have seen first hand of pleco caves along the river banks..

i will not give up intell i have spawned pseudocanthicus
now thats a decent attitude. it is good there are some smaller cave spawning species, that can be bred reasonably easy, but it does mean not a great deal of effort goes into breeding the others. i'd be interested in hearing more about it. you got any plans on a setup? what would you use for sediment? some of the caves created with mud on the banks are amazing, and are so frequent (ive only seen pics tho, as much as id love to go and travel to see them myself).

Yes mud will be one i am going to try a few ways, in more then one pong, at different Temps as well, some caves mud, some wood caves, ceramic caves, PVS, some i will try gravel others sand. some mixed, some variants i will try in a colony and others in just a pair or trios, i will not stop at any end. and will continue my research en tell i have got at least one variant of pseudocanthicus to spawn. i will also be making my ponds and some i will buy 1000gal tubs, i will try river biotopes that will extend up to 15-20feet long with one direction of current i will also try tide pools. i do not plan on giving up. once i start the project full bore i will be writing a article on it as well and documenting as i go along.

i will also try different dithers as well from tetras to small Geo's. i have a nice long list of what i am going to try and these are just a few of them.

your right other species of plecos you do not have to be half involved as you do with pseudocanthicus

just had a quick look around, and the internet is pretty fruitless on articles of spawning etc, but apparently Pseudacanthicus leopardus (although i realise these are different to your ones) have successfully bred in aquaria, and are cave/and or pipe breeders. you prob already know but, thought i'd check just in case. might help incoorportate ideas you already have

I also forgot to mention i will be making a trip to the amazons within the next year or two with a friend that has been there a few times and to get a fist hands look and document there true habitat and try to locate some spawning grounds, i want to find out the sediment mixture in the mud, and also take PH readings as well as temp readings i will be spending a couple weeks there and hopefully in that time frame i will be able to get all the info i need on this awesome dominant creature of South America.

and yup i will be selling the fry.

breeding list will follow,

L25
L273, gold and reds.
LDA07 and L114's

i may possibly try a few others but it all depends on the amount of room i have
