Be careful using Silicone II

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I used GE 1 Tub and Tile silicon to put a baffle into my sump a week ago. 2 days later most of my fish had died, I checked the silicon tube and it has mold resistant on the front of it. Wish I had seen it before but the front of the tube was covered by the silicon gun.

The silicon had a very slimy feel when underwater so I learned a big lesson.

i resealed my 225g with GE 1 , silicone , worked like a charm soo far ..The other silicone's with mold resist agents in them with kill your biological bacteria i heard , which would make sense as to the ammonia you describe getting out of control . No beneficial bacteria no ammonia reduction ... sorry for your loss

Interesting. I didn't put and two together as this has been pointed out by Doc-Fish on previous page. I have my doubts if it can happen in practice but it is sensible on paper:

anti-mold chemicals kill BB, ammonia rises, kills fish.

I just am dubious it all can happen so quickly, over 1-2 days. Usually, ammonia poisoning takes much longer.

In any case, it's safer to remember to stay away from any and all silicones that are NOT approved for incidental food contact. As simple as that. Read the labels, colleagues!
