Beach sand vs store bought sand.

Yeah-take a couple of pails of sand from the beach like originally planned. The laws that zoodiver refers to are intended to protect the environment from wholesale butchery for profit, not restrict the freedoms of beach goers!

I'll bet tons of sand goes home from the beach every day in shoes and beach towels. Your substrate will not be missed.

The LAW is THE LAW. Do not break it just to save yourself some money.

I'm not mad, I just saying this site won't put up with people encouraging illegal activies.

That law is in place for a reason. To stop the action. It's like littering. Sure you are only one person tossing one bag of trash on the beach- what could it hurt? But if everyone did it, where would we be? The same applies to this situation. Taking 'live rock/livesand' from a beach is illegal. Would the world miss one bucket for your home tank. Probably not, but if everyone took some, there would be no beach left.

Just buy some live sand. I haven't heard of the crushed coral problems.

The way I see it, you are going to have to have great filtration, skimming and need to keep a close eye on the parameters if you are doing a reef anyways so who cares.

Forgive me for not knowing the law regarding beaches in a foreign country!

Go ahead and ban me if it makes you feel better. Much ado about nothing anyway

You already commented about me stating it was illegal. Then you encouraged action against that law. Seems pretty straight forward to me.

Even if it was legal I'd still not take sand off the beach. As Reef said, you're adding sand that is essentially sitting in a natural skimmer. Yuck, no thank you.
