HI. i haved a 20gallons tank for 5 years i think. a lot of fishes, plants, invertebrates have been therre since. I always liked the way sand looks, but no one ever teachme nothing about tanks. ( that why I have lost a lot of fishes ) I want to know if I cant get some sand from the beach, clean it and use it in my fresh water tank. It will be , i dont know how to said it , its to opposite of fine sand, it its like made of very small rocks and stuff. it is very heavy also.

sorry for my bad english. i get stuck sometimes in some words lol

thanx in advantage

myslef i wouldn't do that because i would b scared but my buddy did it in his 220 gal tank and this was over a year ago now and his fish seem to like it but i'm not telling u to do it i'm just saying his fish are ok

I think it would be fine... But im not to far into this hobby yet. The only thing i would maybe think about is washing it someway beacuse the posibility of insects or diseases on the rocks from the water and such. Then again i dont know alot about disease transfer .... anyways, hope that helps

i already have beach rocks in my tank. and the only thing i have saw are a lil sea monkey like things but almost microscopic that move fast like hell in a stop motion movement

I'd just use pool filter sand, or play sand from home depot. it's less than $5 for a 50 lb bag, and works great. I think it's illegal to take sand from the beach. there could also be harmful organisms in it.

Beach sand or any sand for that matter can contain parasites or other nasty things that can harm your fish. Make sure you clean the sand very well before you use it and I think it should be okay.

id be worried about what may be living in the sand... but boiling it should take care that...

I'd worry about all kinds of microorganisms living in the sand that even if they die in the FW will foul the tank water.

all water even freshwater contains some salt.... Wash it good enough the salt shouldnt harm your tank... PH might change tho
