what kind of tank set up are you planning to run? size, temp, pH, food etc.
this is so exciting :)

Right now the little fella's in a 20 long. :(
I definitely wasn't expecting to find a beani for sale, so I had to pull a tank out of the garage. He gets a brand new 40 breeder or 55 gallon as soon as I can make it to the LFS though, should be sometime this weekend. When he outgrows that I'll have moved/sold the fish in my 125, and he'll get it all to himself.

You know how it is, you buy a tank in anticipation of a fish, then next time you're at the fish store you think "wow, I'd love a _ _ _ _ _ fish, but I don't have anywhere to put it. But I do have that empty 125..." and then it's all over. ;)

As for water params, the pH is about 7.5, and I keep the temp at about 80. I've heard that beani need low protein foods, so I'm doing some research on that. I'll let you know when I figure out what he'll be eating.

Is it an inch or slightly larger? Please say slightly larger! *** FINGERS CROSSED***

I would say it's about two inches total length. :D

That's awesome. Good luck with it. :D

Thanks.

Congrats on the pick up bro. Welcome to the club. :headbang2 I can't speak for the youngins, but mine's doing great on a mix of NLS and and Hikari Cichlid staple. Best of luck raising him up.

there's a lot of debate about what causes bloat and i disagree that high protein really is an instigator to that.
i think you should feed him good quality goods above all else. protein affects their growth and i can't imagine beani feeding on leaves in the wild. they probably eat things like snails, worms, small fish, tadpoles etc. they might eat some detritus but overall i can't imagine the protein thing causing bloat.
what probably does and will cause bloat are things associated with poor water quality and intestinal bacteria.

Cool, thanks. I was pretty worried about him getting bloat, but it sounds like he'll be alright. So far he's really active, hunting around in the rocks and nibbling at algae, and he's not shy at all.
