Beani Keepers??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Just to add my two cents I have great success with eggcrate on an angle from corner to back of tank, I think no matter how good a pair might seem, its nice for the female to have a little spot for refuge. Even this is no guarentee against the wrath of a Male! But will always hate dividers :)

But often with difficult to breed aggressive fish they don't channel the anger enough to save their mates. I feel that some pairs take a more direct threat to preoccupy them enough to direct the aggression away from the female. In those cases I feel the best option is to split the pair and try again with a different pair.

I'm guessing by the looks of them, and from what duanes has described, that those sub dominant beani pose no threat whatsoever to the dom breeding pair. They are simply punching bags with fins. Not judging, just sayin ....

I think that you have the right attitude, Forrest. IMHO some species in this hobby should probably fly solo, or you learn to live with a divider of some type. I hate the looks of dividers, and for that reason and others I choose not to breed hyper aggro species. These fish do not pair for life in nature, and seldom have any interest in pairing for life in captivity.

Good luck with your new fish, Forrest.

When I say pair, what it actually is, is the tank is divided into thirds, 3 areas by 3 dominant females that the alpha males visits at will. There are 5 sub individuals left with only hidey holes, there is also a fry or 2 from one of the spawns in small nooks and crannies.
The dominant females defend their territories from each other, and any other females and non alpha males.
The male harasses any male, or any other non territorial females.
I started with a dozen, and in the beginning I expected in the to end up with only a pair, the scenario I have now, is quite unexpected.
The only time I've had a death, is when I put a male and 2 females in a 50 gal.

May want to divide the small ones from the larger ones. That's what I would do especially with these guys. Can't wait to see the youtube video
