How far from where you are collecting is Cancun? Im there during your visit, I would love to go fishing for some nice cichlids haha
 
They are not illegal to import. And I was one of a few who brought them back to the USA, legaly.

Cancun is on Atlantic side, east coast, my collecting is halfway beteen Mexico City and Acapulco (West coast). Supposedly about a 3 hour drive from Mexico City, towards Acapulco. The River Istla, which is were the fish gets it's name. Under the Bridge of Istla, near Texuististengo lagoon.
