Hey guys,

I've been thinking about picking up Rapp's Rio Tepic beani. He has them at 1.5-2'', so I was thinking about getting 4 or 5. My question- how long would a 55 work for grow out, and would they be ok with a 5'' black ghost knife? Also, I heard a lot of people lost them to bloat, is there anything i can do to prevent this besides frequent water changes?

Thanks

I have some of the large ones from Rapps, same strain. I'd say major filtration, 50% water changes once a week with a couple of 10% thrown in for detritus clean up in between. I feed mine only NLS Thera A pellets which you can get at a very small size like 1mm. I also have a ton of pots and hiding places for mine as well as a group of large convicts to break up the aggression. I've never had luck raising small Beani but this will give you an idea what I am doing and do with my smaller CA's.

If you can't commit to the water quality I wouldn't bother with them. Tough fish to raise IME.

^ This, and the ghost knife is a no no.

IMO there's no real need to feed the TherA formula on a regular basis, any one of the 1mm NLS formulas would be fine. (such as the Cichlid formula)

i would add an airstone or powerhead and excellent filtration. they are mostly riverine fish so fast flowing, clean, highly oxygenated water will be best for them. :)
