Beani

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have kept a number of them, and they spawned in my tanks.
I found them sensitive to infection at high temps, so I kept mine without a heater, and some in a pond in Milwaukee where water temps dipped into the high 50sF, in summer.
They are quite aggressive, and didn't play well with others, my pair ruled and killed all others in a 150 gal tank.

I have never had a peaceful, non aggressive beani in any tank I put one in. Although in the pond (about 1500 gallons) other cichlids did manage to coexist.

I did see that he had them listed as "most peaceful" as well, wondered how peaceful that meant. Probably still pretty aggressive, most beani are very mean.

One of the most aggressive cichlids ever, and one of the most stunning.

I myself wouldn’t buy beani from COA I bought 4 and they all arrived sickly and not eating all 4 died within a month.I then got 8 from the wetspot all are still doing well a month in.Aggresion isn’t terrible yet,at least it’s spread out.Very cool little fish

I saw that listing, I wondered what the basis for listing them as less aggressive was. My experience would not support that at all. I would expect them to be as aggressive as normal Beani.

Also, as person who has been in the hobby for a long time, I still have to pinch myself in regards to their being available. There was a time when they were almost mythical, even Jeff Rapps could not get them. For time, I think the only breeding pair in the continental US were located in a museum in Arizona. I am sure if you dig into the archives of this very site you would get a feeling for how in-demand they were.

I agree it's crazy to see how common beani are in the hobby now. I remember back 15 years+ ago when I first got into cichlids just how impossible they were to find without paying a fortune. And I don't know ow about least agressive... They're still going to be agressive. I recently bought a group of a 14 San Pedro and they were smaller than expected (1/2-3/4"). However, they seem to be pretty tough. They're 1-1.5" now and haven't lost one.

Any update on your beani cichlid?
