Bearded dragon hind legs paralysed

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I used to hear a lot of funny tales about feeding mealworms to geckos. People used to say that they actually ate through the stomach and ended up killing the geckos. Although the Beardies aren't geckos I don't believe the mealworms are your problem. Howeveer, I believe that adding calcium dusted crickets as a main staple along with good veggies and mealworms or super worms given as a treat would benefit your Beardies. The Mighty Oscar definitely has a point with using a proven UVB "tube" light such as Zoo Med or Reptisun, etc. as they are PROVEN light sources. Metabolic Bone Disease is caused by a calcium deficiency in reptiles that cripples the poor little guys. I've been fortunate enough as a previous gecko breeder to have a Vet well versed in reptiles.

the mealies eating through the stomach is a BS made up story(LOL)

they aren't good for ay size dragons, but worse for dragons under 16" because of their shells. their systems are not developed enough to handle the shells and they may end up impacted over time. feeding mealies to beardies is not recommended and if you have to..as a rule the dragons should be over 16"

even then, it's still a bad idea. supers are a better choice, but again..only if the dragon is over 16".

I do appreciate the feedback and will do all above on the remaining dragon however would like a simple question answered should I put him down

I HIGHLY recommend starting them on Phoenix Worms. They are a little pricier than other foods, but they are packed with calcium and do not even need to be dusted. They have been shown to actually reverse the effects of minor MBD.

Can we get some pics of the injured dragon? That may help diagnose him.

now way...just get the right light and dust his food 3-4 times a week with calcium w/d3. if it's MBD he'll be fine if you do that.

are there no vets near you?

Your dragon can be normal again dont give up as of now. 3 things may be causing this: MBD(metabolic bonne desiase), obstrucion of the gastrointestinal sistem or spinal damage. Dust the crickets daily with a good suplement like herptivite and gut load them before feeding with fish food and greens. What greens are you using specificly? Avoid all that have oxalic acid like carrots, spinach and letuce. Give him water cress, rucula, mustard greens and dandilions. And you should go to a vet and have him X-rayed. That will say if he´s with lack of calcium or something more serious is happening. Will also show if he´s inpacted. Also NO mealworms, normal or giant. Phoemix worms are better;)

Well sounds like someone has learned a thing or two from the old timer;)

Update on this guy. Now barely eating and spend most of the time over by the water dish on the cooler side of the tank. Still not moving...I do not know whatto do.
