I am thinking about geeting a bearded dragon but I know nothing about them. What size tank would be best for them? And what would I use for substrate ( I was thinking sand ) any good websites you guys know about would be great to!

I am sorry but my tiredness does not allow me to go find a website.

In the long term I think you should have 40g+. They eat crickets, mealworms, lettuce, carrots. They are quite cool dragons. I THINK sand is okay, but I'm not sure.

Sand is fine for adults. For juvies, sand can cause intestinal impaction if ingested (accidentally while the animal is eating). If you are not getting a baby one, play sand from your local hardware store should be ok. The nice thing about it is that when the animal defacates, the sand sticks to it and holds all of the moisture together in a big clump for easy and complete removal.

Here is some reading for you.

I would agree with a 40 breeder as a minimum tank size. For the substrate if it is a juvenile and you want to stick with the sand I would go with the calcium sand that is what I used and I never had a problem with it. And switch it to playsand when they get older so you wont be paying an arm and a leg to fill up its cage. Or if you dont want to take the risk of impaction you can use newspaper it is easy and safe just not as appealing to the eye. They are a really easy lizard to keep and have great personalities. Mine will come to the front of the cage and beg for food or to get out everytime I walk by them. So I would highly recommend them.
A good site is http://www.beardeddragonguide.com/. Good Luck!

Forgot about that stuff. They will actually eat it on purpose too if they need more calcium in their diet and it's ok for juvies from what I remember.

had one for 2+ years, when my wife decided one day to put him in a spare 10 gallon tank and let him get some sun. overheated and died :(

but had him in a 70gal, zoo med lamps with a sunning rock and hut for shade
crushed walnut shell is also an effective substrate, and wont harm the lizard if eaten

(be sure you have a lid of some sort, mine loved to jump out and explore the house)

Remenbar to gut load the prey items and ad also some dark leafy veggies like turnip, mustard and dandilion greens

Thank you guys for all the info!!! It will help alot!!!
