I am in the process of setting up a 55 gal. tank to house my very first bearded dragon. I am just looking for any helpful ideas or suggestions that ya'll might have to help me out in this process. I have the lights, food bowl, water bowl, top, decorations, thermometers, the only thing I am waiting on is my lizard.

Do you have the calcium sand too? They are really fun lizards...

check out this link to ZooMed....They have lots fo useful items you can get at your Local Pet Store!

dont use the calcium sand, all it dose is stain the lizard, insted i would use play sand with the real fine grane you can get that at home depo for like $2-$4 for 50lbs.

i used that with all my bearded dragons when i had em.

I agree on the playsand count; if you're counting on your beardie to get its calicum from accidentally ingesting sand...that will be one MBD'd lizard!

Check out anapsid.org for a great care sheet/pages on bearded dragons.

When I kept my breeder colony, I found that a pinkie mouse, or better yet, one that was slightly fuzzy, was a great treat!

yeah, "regular" sand would be sufficient.. just "dust" food items regularly with a calcium powder before feeding to keep em healthy!

I am using newspaper right now because I was told not use sand because if the bearded dragon ate any of the sand he would get bloateed and could die. I don't know if that is true maybe ya'll could confirm that.

I have two adult beardies siten right next to me.. they have been on sand, orcid bark ,coccunut shaveings , calcie sand and a few other substrateds.. I dust with a full vitamin suplament and have never had a problome.. I have heard that regular sand will cause problomes, BUT think of the normal habitat of thes herps.. So I dont much beleave that as to be true or they would never servive in the wild..

The only subsrates that I stay away from are pine shaveings and other rodent beedings .. They have been proven to cause respatoriy problumes..

Dragons should be on newspaper or paper towels until they are about 6" long (including tail). When they are that small, they can't pass any sand they might accidentally ingest when they dive for crickets.

My adult beadie (7 years old) eats the crap out of his play sand when he grabs insects from time to time and has never had any issues over the years.
