OK I am going to ask one more question, then I will shut up I promise:grinno:

Rock salt as in the stuff I use to melt ice on my drive way?
and kosher salt as in the stuff I use to season my food?

just want to confirm so i dont get something bad for my fish.

both you guys (KenyanSandBoa & sinister j) said you personally used rock salt. Where do you get it from? (what kinda store)

Haha, well we call it hawaiian salt. Its just a normal rock salt that you can use to season food. I buy a 2# bag every now and the from costco. If not, Mortons makes a 50# of aquarium salt(not table salt).

The only dats that live in brackish waters in the wild are NGT, and Silvers

Wide bars, Thin bars, and Indos are found in completely fresh water in the wild

From what I read from everyone, NGT, and Silvers do very well in fresh water, I do not know if the fresh water species would do well in brackish water though.

You even hear a lot of stories about how some stores have kept ITs, NTTs, and STs in brackish tanks and they looked like crap. Usually the story ends the same way...as soon as they were acclimated to straight fresh, they brightened right up and became fully stable.

I have my ATs in straight fresh and I haven't had any problems at all. My NGTs are arriving tomorrow and I'm putting them in fresh water (with rock salt) so we'll see how they do.

LOL...same here....except I'm a Sam's Club member.

TCZeli...as long as it's just sodium chloride, you'll be fine. Kosher salts are fine because there are no additives.

I thought aquarium and table salt dont do anything as far as salinity goes???

only marine salt...

They don't...that's what we want though. :D

We're keeping our dats in fresh water, just with added sodium chloride as a preventative measure.

I have marine salt that I use to make saltwater for my hermit crabs, and I mix that up in 2-liter bottles. I have a 75 gallon tank with goldfish, and I usually put 1 2-liter in there, my GOLDFISH have never looked better, and it doesn't seem to bother them at all.

So I guess you could say that you can use salt with other fish.
