Below are pics of the build of the fiance's stand for her new 90g(stand & tank are Christmas, New Years, B-day present(New Years baby)). Plus a finished pic of my 125g stand. Both are built with the same method.

End piece(qty 4), 2"x10" notched for 2"x4"s in this case(2"x6" on the 125).

End piece with runners attached (qty 2) Place the two back to back to create the box frame. Two 2"x10"s give a front to back measurement of 19" which works out perfect for __" x 18" tanks.

Frame with top, The top is not needed but looks better when finished with a tank on it vs with out. All shimming to level tank is done in between the frame and the top, hides it very well. This top consists of two 1"x8" and one 1"x6". Measures 51 1/2" x 20" and leaves a nice over hang on three sides

Building the doors, plywood covered tongue & groove pine paneling(can also use cedar but costs twice as much and I am cheap) .

Doors built, all the tongue & grove paneling on and bottom trim in place.

Stand with open door.

Plus the finished and in use stand for my 125g.

All the joints on the stands are secured with 3" screws and liquid nails construction adhesive. As you can see the doors are full width of the stand which gives great access for filters and storage. They could be stained but I just go with the natural look.

Build sheet:
qty...........item......................price
1...........2"x10" x 10'...........................$5.97
4...........2"x4 x 6'.................................5.96(1.49ea)
2...........1"x8" x 6'................................5.88(2.94ea)
1...........1"x6" x 6'................................1.74
2...........pine paneling(bundle) ............13.76(6.88ea)
2...........4" T-hinge(pair).....................17.18(8.59ea)
2...........handles(ea)...........................1.98(.9 9ea)
4...........roller door latch......................2.76(.69ec)
1...........1# box 3" deck screws............2.28
3...........small tube liquid nails..............8.61(2.87ea)
1...........1"x3" x 8' furring strip(trim).....0.98
--------------------------------------------------------
total.......................................$67.10 +tax

Nice job. a lot better than the usual "barrel" like siding I see.

I think it would look nice stained.

Wow cheep too, a stand for a 125 gallon could run up a pretty penny.

nice job!
i like how you hid the shims... good idea im goig to steal it next time :)

I agree on the staining, how ever I didn't have time when I built the one for the 125g. It was a crap I need a stand yesterday thing and I would prefer the two match so this one will remain natural until they both can be done.

Even with the 2"x6" runners on the one for the 125g it was less then $70 to build. Not bad for a stand you can show off in a living room.

On subsequent builds I think I will stay with 2"x6" runners unless it is for a 55g or smaller. It may not be needed but hey, overkill.

It works out good. Once the stand is in place I put the tank on it break out the level and square find the low spots(boards on the top) slide the tank over, back off the screws for the top in that area and tap the shims under the low ones as needed, then tighten the screws back up. If there is a gap between the top and the stand after shimming you can hide it with a piece of trim or corner molding.

The top also makes it so people who like to use foam to set their tank on have a larger surface to do so.
