I make alot of my own food and I mix it up with gelatin to keep it together a lil better. If you keep the pieces to where the fish swallow it in one shot it shouldn't be much different from regular food. I have been doing my mixes for about 2 years and had no probs.
1. 3 parts pureed beef heart, using 3/4 tsp agar/cup 180F hot water. Add no more hot water/agar than is necessary to get the machine you use to do the puree.
Agar is the binder. It works better than unflavored gelatin but either one will work. 1 tsp VitaChem, 1/4 cup F.D. Cyclop-Eeze and 1 tsp Spirulina Algae powder. Blend all this together.
2. 1 part F.D. Blood worms
3.1 part Earthworm Flakes
Fold or use slow speed mixer to combine ingredients #2 and #3 with the puree #1. You want to avoid breaking them up. The F.D. Blood worms are good nutrition but they also act much like fiber reinforcement which improves the mixes cohesion as it thaws and is being eaten by the fish. It also allows less binder to achieve good cohesion. Agar or Gelatin are water soluble proteins and the least amount you can use and still get good cohesion will reduce the amount of protein that dissolves in the aquarium water and enters the nitrogen cycle without going through a fishes gut first.
I have been making beef heart blends for Discus for 40 years and this basic recipe has proven to be among my best.
