I've fed my fish pre-packaged beefheart in the past. just curious, there's no reason you couldn't get a whole heart from the butcher and portion it your self, is there? I imagine you could get a whole heart (probably a years supply, in my case) for about the same price as you get 30 measly portions pre-packaged.

anybody done this? is there any specific parts of the heart that should be used or avoided?

Probably the same thing though I bet the store bought stuff is no where near as nutritional for the fish as the beefheart fishfood itself.

i buy it from the grocery store. dirt cheap and the fish love it

I just feed beefheart as a protein/growth supplement, anyway. my fish get their vitamins from pellets.

yeah, what's beef heart go for, like $3.00/lb? it can't be in too high demand (I don't think). a 30 portion package at the LFS is like $6.00, and its probably not even 1/8lb.

you just cut it up and portion it?

no parts to avoid?

i cant remember the price but i think its much less than that. and yeah i just cut it into small bits since my fish are still small and cut out any fatty areas

Over here, it's a £5 for a full heart, there is a lot of waste to get to the 'meat' and can be a lot of blood. You need to trim all the 'skin' veins etc. to get to the brownish meat, the first time I did it I was like:nilly::nilly: but seconds later you just switch into hunter/gatherer mode and look for a bigger knife;)

I've got a pic of one somewhere that I took to frighten the wife, I'm not sure the mods would approve;)

basically the reason for not getting the heart itself would be the fact that it is a lot more work/mess compared to the little packet of cubes from the LFS

Work? 30 minutes every 3 months, plus the savings are huge;)

i get it from the grocery store. I have a mini food processor. grinds it up good.
but i only feed it to growing fish, not adults.

its eagerly devoured by them. and cheap. way cheaper than buying from the pet store. way more and you can add whatever you want if you grind it up and make it into a recipe, then mix it and freeze it into chunks. i use peas, vita-chem,white fish, prawns, mushed pellets, and a little spinach.

they love it
