This is from the polypterid introduction and primer. Beefheart is perfectly fine for polys and, as long as you're varying the diet enough to meet their nutritional needs, you can feed polys beefheart as much as you want.

But it is better if you don't. their digestive system isn't designed to handle meat from mammals on a daily basis, being that polypterus don't feed on cattle for example

 Too bad they dont! They would take the most monster title for sure!

I agree with cichlaholics. It just makes sense to try to feed your fish mainly things it would eat in the wild...and the internal organs of a cow is not one of them. Yes it is a good protein source but not a good staple food

I feed beef liver a similar food once a day

I've read people who make their own foods that mix in mammal protein, and feed it every day. I really don't think it should be the ONLY food, but I doubt it would be THAT detrimental if you want to feed it every day.

I have read in some study, it was a while back (3-4 years ago) when I was considering beef heart, that feeding fish mammalian meat causes some type of deposits in the fishes liver or somewhere that can reduce the life expectancy of the fish. If I recall correctly it might have something to do with the fish not being able to completely break down the mammalian meat, as Cich Anon already mentioned. My guess is if a fish has it rarely like once or twice a month it shouldn't cause too much of the deposits in the liver (or wherever it was) and shorten the life of your fish but, I cold be wrong. Sorry I don't remember the name of the study or where to find it but once I read that I skipped beef heart.

For my Bichirs I feed market shrimp, talapia, kens sinking sticks (earthworm, catfish pellets, veggie sticks) soft and moist krill, NLS, Hikari Sinking gold. Had very good growth from some Endlis.

it really isn't necessary though, why not use some large nightcrawlers instead

I agree. Crawlers are very very healthy and most everything loves them.
