hey, I gotta beer bottle with the bottom cut off, I wanna breed cichlids in it, I want to put the cap back on the top so the fry can swim up the neck for protection. But I am concerned about the cap being toxic. What do you think?

I think the fact that you have to ask if the cap is toxic is full reason to not put it in the tank. Do you live in a frat house? why would you want a beer bottle in your tank? maybe try an old tire too that might work lots of room for breeding in a tire.

sounds like hostility or sarcasm. perhaps both?

Ruxpin- i think a bottle cap should be fine. i dont see anything leeching out of something used for human consumption like that. make sure you rinse the beer off. good luck w/ the breeding.

i kinda agree with xtyson, i like the more natural look, but you don't gotta be a b**** about it. anyways i would be concerned with the bottle cap going rusty.

well yeah the bottle cap is made of a carbon steel which is gonna rust. unless you have some form of stainless steel bottle cap. Which i doubt.

dont forget that only the inside of the cap is protected from rusting as beer doesnt get to the outside of the cap. Which you plan on sinking the whole cap underwater the outside only has a thin layer of paint which is gonna have small scratches on it from bottiling which will then rust.

rusty would be my concern aswell

didn't figure in the rust or sharp glass.

perhaps some silicon and a piece of plastic to close it off? glob silocone around the sharp parts of the bottle? i guess this would work if you're married to the idea of using the bottle.
