Your impression of American beer is unfortunately colored by the fact that American craft/microbrewery beer is not available in Canada. Thus, you're stuck drinking the crap that is pumped out by the large American breweries. As the British saying goes, "American beer is like sex in a canoe--it's f@#king close to water."

I'm in Canada every year or so and make a point of visiting local brewpubs and sampling a variety of Canadian craft beers. IMO, mass-produced Canadian beer is definitely superior to mass-produced American beer. However, I am equally convinced that American craft beers are better than their Canadian counterparts.
