Bees killing my fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I feed my fish bees, wasps, hornets all the time. Now most of them are dead when they hit the water, but haven't had any problems so far. Good to reality check on some people's experiences where it hasn't gone as well.
My O's eat wasps no problem, but the's guys are 2 1/2 inches max. I'd imagine a sting would be more damaging.

Although it could be completely coincidence. Only time will tell, but I can't really sacrifice any more of these guys by testing the theory. Lol

Not saying this is a definitive answer, but there have been studies to test whether fish feel pain where they've injected bee venom into their lips (rainbow trout in the articles I've seen). I've never seen reports of fatalities or illness in these articles, just contradictory results (fish reactions) and contradictory opinions on what they mean. I've also seen articles saying bee venom is an antibacterial agent and that it's been tested for fish pathogens. (example reference link)

Fuzzy=bee. Smooth=wasp or hornet is my general rule.

I used to feed spiders to my tetras when I was a kid. I threw a good sized wolf spider in one time expecting the pack to dismember and share it. The alpha tried to claim it by grabbing the abdomen. The spider wrapped its legs around his face and bit him square on the top of his nose. He spit that bad boy out and none of the fish would mess with it after that

I let it go

Interesting. I appreciate the reply. I'll definitely read the article in a few.

It's definitely bees. The type of bee is what I wasn't sure of. I'm sure they're honey bees now. Interesting about the spiders though. What kind of Tetras were they? Payara? Exodons? Just curious.

I'm curious now, I have a dozen or so Convict fry, I might move them into the tank the bees like going in. Just to test further.
