Begginer intermediated looking for help on 30 gallon set up

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I ordered the bacterAE. I had 4 ottos in there for the last six months. Since I sold of the 50 Apistogramma I had bred in there. I new my filter would be low on bacteria. I went from 4 Ottos to 20 guppies and 13 Shrimp. Everything has been fine untill today. I noticed my shrimp swimming eradicly. So I tested my water and found light trace amounts of ammonia. Probably from over feeding. Food gets caught up in my hudge pile of moss and becomes really difficult to vacuum out. I double dosed it with prime immediately and moved some more media from my other tank. So I'm thinking vacuum it out do a water change. Or keep dosing prime and wait untill the filter catches up. Or pick up some Microbacter startxlf live bacteria and dose the tank.

Any suggestions on the best method would be appreciated.

Can the shrimp bounce back if I get this under control fast?

I'll feed less from now on but if any one knows how to clean moss with out removing it ( because all my shrimp are living in it) I'd love to hear your ideas. Thsnks

Shrimp and most other scavengers are pretty resilient and aren't completely unaccustomed to hanging out in suboptimal conditions... it's what they do. And guppies are a heck of a lot tougher than most of us would presume. My guess is that you'll be fine and when it gets right down to it note that a skinnier fish is healthier than a fat fish so don't feel bad about cutting back on the groceries.

If there's a way to put a stick or something similar in the tank to help anchor the moss it will allow you the chance to feed on the lee side of the moss so food doesn't get stuck in it. Be that as it may, food not stuck in the moss and instead stuck in the filter is the same thing where water quality is concerned. The only difference is one is less unsightly than the other.

Thank you, to be honest that was a bit of a rushed stress post. I should have just thought it through and figured it out. I did a 25% water change, cleaned the moss with a turkey basket and added a small amount of purigen to the filter to help clean it up. I think it will be ok. Thank you for your reply it's comforting to know all my shrimp aren't going to just die because I made the mistake of adding too much too quickly when I know better
