mY friend had africans mixed with ca/sa cichlids and everyone was fine and growing but then the africans just started dropping one by one till they were all gone... Stick with one or the other and you will be fine

so tell me help me out here cuz i really dont have room for another tank, and unfornuntaly i cant just get rid of them im sure a few i could but ive grown quite attached to most of them and their personalitys...and if the outcome isnt goin to be could either way..stuck in a rock and hard spot here THanks PETCO

The issues with water parameters is a mute point when it comes to these tank breed/raised fish. Some of these CA cichlids come from pretty hard water with high Ph so I wouldn't worry about that aspect. Your fish look healthy to me. The astetic aspect of mixing the two is another story but if it's what you like, hey it's your tank keep what you want. As far as aggression goes, well that ramains to be seen the JD and Con can get pertty rough but if the fish grow up together they might get along fine only time will tell. I think if you do you water changes and keep the tank clean you're off to a good start. We all learn as we go, I've made plenty of mistakes along the way. Keep an open mind and ask alot of questions. Here's my male and female I just recently sold.

He shared a tank with a few different fish and didn't play well with others when he got big.

Here he is guarding fry, pardon the dirty glass. Didn't want to spook them and have them eat the fry.

The blue face is how they're sexed. Blue gill plates is a female, females rarely have colorful bodies like males. This female is the rare exception.

Hi and welcome! As stated above, most of the fish we keep have been bred in less than native conditions, so I agree with the water parameter discussion. I live in Florida with very hard water and higher ph and my sa/ce species spawn regularly.

I have separate setups for my ce and my africans, but thats because Id rather a more natural look and more natural behavior, but lets be real here for a minute. There's really nothing natural about keeping fish in glass boxes. They're pets that are interacting with people being spoiled with prepared food several times a day. lol

The only real issues you'll run into is when your fish begin to grow and display different levels of aggression along the way. Africans cash be a little rowdy for a lot of other species, so further down the road when your fish grow, you may want to rehouse some. The suggestion of eventually using to separate setups is a pretty good one.

I use the exact same lighting setup for my 300 and have found it to be my favorite for fish colors, and trust me, I've tried every bulb and style at one point or another. As long as your tank is clean and your fish are happy, enjoy your fish. they all look great, despite the fact that they naturally live in different places on earth. In my big tank, I house sa plecos, ce cichlids and even a rainbow shark, which is from asia. The shark is about 6" and 6 years old and is super fat.

Welcome to mfk, once again and welcome to the hobby!
