I think it depends on what your friend wants. Something he can handle, something with more color, something nearly impossible to kill, etc... Leos, cresteds, various anoles, day geckos, etc could all be good choices.
 
I have a few babies in a 10 g turned to the side to make it tall , but once adulti seen pairs in 20 g's

A 20 gallon tall would be perfect for a Crested.
 
They have a temperature gradient from the mid 60's to about 80 F. Temperatures in the high 80's on up can stress and kill this species.
