State of chaos
I hope to get a freshwater tank in the next year or so. Something small, low maintenence, but not a Goldfish. I love Goldfish but I want something "braggable." Something that I can say, "Hey look at my new ____. His name is _____, and he's the best pet ever." On this site. Well...I guess that by now you know what fish I want the most.

But I know that there are some other cool fish that don't need much more than a water heater. Plecos, Cories, Flagfish...etc. Even willing to go for some of my other favorites, Archers or Monodactylus Argentinus. Does anyone have any suggestions, corrections? Not sure how soon my parents will let me get this stuff but I want to know.

Cories are great little fish IMO

a large school of small hardy fish looks nice as well, like danios or rasboras or tetras, none of them are impressive in small numbers but a school/shoal or 8 or more looks good swimming through the water.

Kribs are supposed to be fairly easy as are some apistos or bolivian rams.

any fish is going to need adequate filtration and a healthy cycled tank though, nothing is totally maintence free!!

I think you have the right idea. convicts are great beginner fish. they have more personallity than livebearers, can live through most any beginner mistake, and breed quite easily.

firemouths are good ones, too.

what size tank are you talking about?

a blue acara is a pretty good beginner fish. that and males have some awsome colors.

1. Rosy barbs (Puntius conchonus)
2. Zebra danios (Brachydanio rerio)
3. Cherry barbs (Puntius titteya)
4. Kuhli loaches (Pangio kuhlii)
5. Bronze corydoras (Corydoras aeneus)
6. Checker barbs (Barbus oligolepis)
7. Guppy (Poecilia reticulata)
8. Platy (Xiphophorus maculatus)
9. Swordtail (Xiphophorus helleri)
10. Peppered Corydoras (Corydoras paleatus)
11. Giant danios (Devario aequifasciata)
12. White cloud mountain minnows (Tanichthys albonubes)
13. Pearl danio (Brachydanio albolineatus)
14. Red-tailed rasboras (Rasbora boraptensis)
15. Black skirt tetras (Gymnocorymbus ternetzi)
16. Buenos Aires tetras (Hemigrammus caudovittatus)
17. Red-eye tetra (Moenkhausia sanctaefilomenae)
18. Beacon tetra (Hemigrammus ocellifer)
19. Lemon tetra (Hyphessobrycon pulchripinnis)
20. Golden pencilfish (Nannostomus beckfordi)

Hope this helps.
