I'm thinking of buying 2 baby red-bellied Piranha's, but i have no clue how or what to feed them, what they need in their tank, etc.

Here is a list of things you people can hopefully help me with( And that i'll be eternally Grateful for. :) )

Need to know the cheapest thing i can feed them(Money doesn't grow on tree's in my house, sadly.)

Need to know how much to feed them each day(s).

Need to know what equipment i need(Filters, etc)

And around their growth rate, so i know when i'll need a bigger tank

And any other helpful information that would help me & i would need to know.

Thank you very much in advance, if i get them i'll be sure to hang around the forums & get to know everyone. :)

Just some comments to complete what our friend JP has accurately stated.

1.- Don't think feeding P's is expensive, there are a lot of optionas available thar are really cheap like white fish fillet, squid fillet and beffheart, so don't worry about spending a lot of money.( if you smoke you are spending more money on it, u bet your arse)....:D

2.-Feed them as much as they can eat in 1/2 an hour, cut the fillet/squid, whatever in small hunks about the size of a fullmouth chuck then into the acuarium and after half an hour take away the uneaten remains. When they're very young feed them daily, when they are about 5" feed them every now an then.

3.- You're gonna need a good filter system the leats one that can give you a water filtering rate of 4 to 5 time the whole whater tank per hour. If you can't get one that does the job go with two like me.

A heater is desired unless where you live is warm or hot. Mexico City has a nice warm weather almost all the year, I can leave my tanks without heater per about 8 months a year, maybe a little more but that's me I dont' know about yiour city man.

Get a thermometer so you can control your tank's temp, it should be from 24 to 28 celcius.

Regarding tank size, the biggest the better, but if you're just planning to keep two an 55 gal will do althought I do not advise you to keep just two of them....

The first year of life they would range from 6" to 8" and then the growth rate decreases growing about 1 or two inches per year but it depend on some factors.

I hope this info helps you.

Cheers.

I would get at least three reds if I were you... Unless they are a breeding pair, two reds usually turn to one red really fast.

i started feeding shrimp the day i got them when they were only nickel sized... then eventually i progressed them to pellets and now that is what they eat.. with the occasional fish from my fishing trips.. they are nice and healthy 7-8 inchers now :P

i would get 3 and try to get a hold of a 75 gallon tank.. imo its not worth trying to get them started in a small tank just to move them in a month.. it only took mine 8 months to get to 6 inches..

I saw these really nice silver piranha's in a shop too, i'm thinking of maybe getting them instead but i don't know what they are yet. :(

good luck with ur setup and have fun hehe =)

i'm no RBP expert, but i just recently purchased 5 baby RBPs for my 60 gallon. I'm down to 3 now, but they're much bigger. 2 months ago when they were babies... they absolutely loved plain old flakes and small freeze dried bloodworms. i started adding in some small pellets too. started feeding them 2-3 times a day, and slowly lowering that as long as they eat everything.

oh, and freeze dried krill (broken up when they're smaller), and some frozen bloodworms...

JP hit it right imo. I would go with no less than 3 though. Never 2.
