What would you guys recommend for a first Ray. i have never owned one, but would like to. I hear about teacup rays and have been thinking about getting one of those for my tank.......Thanks

What size tank do you have?

There's no single species that are "teacup" it's most often the reticulated Ray, however there are hystrix days that are sometimes also labeled as teacup but that is a very rare occasion.

Motoros are good beginner rays because of they're cheap and readily available but they can get huge.
Mini marble motoros are a motoro variant the usually max less than 12" disc size and are also hardy.
Hystrix are a great begginer Ray but are hardly available due to export bans.
Black rays would be an option if you have some cash to get rid of but will get big.

Hystrix or mini marble.
As stated above, depends on your tank size really.
A male marble motoro could be a good choice also as males stay smaller than females.

I think someone new to rays should not be expected to have the perfect ray tank starting out. If they are willing to buy a bigger tank when needed they can start off with a small motoro male and find out if ray keeping is something they want to do.I bet we would not have a quarter of the ray keepers that we have now if we had all had to start out with a 300 gallon tank. I think we should encourage new ray keepers to get bigger tanks but not scare them off from getting started..
