Sorry to hear about your fish but that was a great example on why you should keep a record if you are a new or have quite a few fish.

Always unplug your heater when starting a water change and always remember to plug it back in when your done. Been there, done that!

Set a budget and stick to it. And as stated research research research. Know what you're buying and what the typical going rates are. Everything that sounds like a deal isn't. Routine water changes.

This.

Also, when getting in to the hobby, a lot of people tend to get excited - they set up a tank and drop some fish in. This is a mistake that I made a few years back when I started fishkeeping. It causes months of headaches and little expenses. Tying in to the research point, know about the nitrogen cycle and the need to let a tank cycle properly. It is so much easier than dealing with months of sick fish and usually the loss of at least a few.

dont trust lfs employees especially chain stores. they often dont know much if anything about fish care and they lie... A LOT! (coming from a used car salesman that should put it in perspective lol)

Put a thermometer in there, even in a coldwater/subtropical tank.... It can tell you if you a) need a heater at all, b) have a broken heater, or c) forgot to plug the heater back in.... (Guilty of c for the last two weeks....)
