So, I have a friend who knows very little about fish keeping who is getting a 120 gallon tank, and is relying on me for knowledge because I have been in the hobby for a good while. Even though he is a beginner he immediately drawn towards a monster, he has specifically mentioned an arowana, but I don't think that is the best option for someone new to aquariums. Any thoughts? alternative stockings?

An aro will outgrow the 120 pretty quickly. What does he consider monster? Does he want 1 fish or a community?

With your help an arowana is not a bad option, but tank size is. If he wants an aro he needs that doubled. 240g

By monster, i think he wants a fish that can eat other fish, and something that people will look at and be impressed by. He first wanted red belly piranhas but they are illegal where we live so... Ive been thinking something like a rocket gar, but he hasn't seemed to get attached to that. What are some other good options I can pitch him? Also, from looking at the space he is going to put it and i think he can go no bigger than 120 g.

I've lucked up a few times by picking up a traded in belligerent fish from my LFS. Everyone who came over was amazed by A big single crazy fish. They all called them all "Oscar's". They were red devil, a green terror , a oscar and a flowerhorn

My red devil is crazy. He attacks the algie magnet. The Oscars I got are not as crazy as the red devil. But the Oscar's are crazy to watch eat. Alot of personality in both types of fish.

I completely agree with Oscars, they are probably my favorite cichlid. I think he would rather a flower horn over an oscar, which i do not like.
