hablias malabricus ....wolf fish....very hardy.....good jumpers.....I have had success keeping with other large cichlids....do not neccessarily require species specific tank as opposed to my fin niping red bellies.

it all depends on the ssize of your tank. But i'd suggest red Bellies and nothing less than 5 in a tank. bigger is better in a tank with piranhas.. if ur just getting one a smaller tank will do

here is my two cents. for a beginner, pygos always stand the chance of taking one another out, specially if conditions are not good. they are also messier, they eat more and there are more of them. you could get a serra species like a rhom. they grow slowly about 1 inch a year, so most size tanks will be fine for a long time, and you dont have to work about cannibalism. the water needs ph of 7 and a temp of 78, thats about it. but piranhas are skittish get a 75 g tank and a midas cichlid, you wont be upset

For a beginning piranha keeper my advise is P. nattereri for the simple reason is that if you keep shoaling Ps you WILL lose some and they are much cheaper.
If you get a Serrasalmus I advise a rhombeus just because they tend to be the ones that are more available and cheaper than most other serras.
If you have a large tank you want to dedicate to a single fish and don't mind spending some bucks I like the S. elongatus.
