So I added 6 convicts over a month ago to try and clean up some of the mess my fahaka puffer leaves behind when he eats. I got them at not even an inch and basically expected the worse but hoped for the best. Well not only have the convicts survived but two have paired off and are protecting the inside of a rustic plane I have in the tank (eggs/babies?). Even more unexpected still is the fact that it seems the Fahaka is being slightly bullied by the female, he tends to lean away when she threatens him and she will actually nip at his body (which does absolutely no damage but he hasn't killed her yet so it must not bug him too much.)

haha be careful with the convicts. They stressed my fahaka out and I had to get rid of them. This has resulted in a two week hungerstrike and a whole lot of frustration and guilt for me. I still haven't gotten him back to eating.

IMO Convicts are mean little so and so's and I'll never keep them again!

it doesn't make sense why doesn't he just eat them if they bug him?

Maybe coz hes not by nature a piscivore or could be that doesn't like the taste of fish? Could even be that your Fahaka is a whimp, which isn't completely impossible...

There just to small to catch right now. Give it a year and they will start to show up dead. One by one.

Thats what mine has done 2 times now. I put a few in when they are small to give the fahaka something to do and to clean up the shrimp scraps. And they last 8-10 months or so.

It seems like once they hit 3-4" they start becomeing food. I dont know if thats when they can be caught or they start to stand there ground at that age/size.

Convicts are simply things that my lep throws around the tank.

I have thrown Hondurian Red Points(basically Convicts), Convicts, Kribs, a variety of Tetras and a few other fish in with my Fahaka. As long as I keep on schedule with feeding the Fahaka the other fish are fast enough that after 10 seconds of chase the Fahaka gives up and they live on.

The moment a fish makes a "territory" and attempts to defend it. It is good night, and the Fahaka gets a snack.

well i understand why they are acting so mean, i figured they were breeding but now i have the actually evidence. the egglings have hatched and the male and female convict are taking turns the the plane/cave. They are super aggressive toward him and he is clearly not liking it but doesn't fight back. I think if I starved him a bit he'd snap on them but I kinda feel bad intensionally allowing them to get eaten. They are still too small for him to catch as they are at most 1.5 inches. When they are full size they're aren't going to be able to slip in and out of the plane so easy and will likely get smoked, in the mean time they are nipping the fahaka a lot and I'm getting really annoyed.
