Belo Monte Dam to Severely Damage Xingu River Fish Habitat

Humans are often short-sighted species that tends to see only a few yards ahead.. Not many could "appreciate" or bother to look further on the butterfly effect.
The building of this Belo Monte dam is just another classic example of severe environemntal damage that is weighted upon financial and short term benefits..
Afterall, a country usually deem their development as priority.. Environemntal conservation often comes after the country become developed.

I had heard about this some time back but didn't know there was a petition. It is easy to think negatively and say that signing the petition won't do anything but at least we can try to think positively and sign it. I signed and posted a link on facebook. I would love to have seen that area of Brazil someday if it could be preserved.

it is depressing.
it's depressing you told me how disappointing I was AFTER I signed the pointless petition.
it is depressing that you believe the crap spewed by people who want you to believe that the environment is still salvageable so they can get away with political BS, saying jobs are more important than air and water quality.
it is depressing you feel I should be ashamed of myself for not being willing to do something when I gave up the woman I loved because I would only adopt, not procreate, based on my belief that there are already too many people on this planet.
it is depressing, that based on three sentences, you say all I've done is complain when I've always voted, but never won-because environmental parties don't win. that I only plant native species for wildlife, that I've been driving the most fuel efficient car I could afford for the last 20 some years. That I mostly bicycled to work for 10 years until I was transferred too far away to continue.
it is depressing that with 7 billion people on this planet governments offer incentive to have more children
until the population growth gets controlled, nothing will be enough. we have a growth based economy, there's only one place for us to grow... figure it out.

more disappointing than the fact that we've already screwed up the planet too far for us to be able to fix it? you have priority issues.
and since you're so great, did you manage to stop the Three Gorges Dam? save any of the dolphins?

Likewise, so you know, opposition to the dam is only mounting. Both in Brazil and out of it. In fact, it doesn't seem like all too many want to support the project. And as far as I know, only little construction has been made as of this time.

And while signing a petition is only a small action we can do now, there are a number of actions that we can do at this moment as FISHKEEPERS that can benefit the potentially displaced species of the Xingu. Some things such as:

1) Breeding endemics of the river.
2) Promoting the captive breeding of said endemics.
3) Renew interest in fish from the river.

Though, these things probably HAVE been done by a number of keepers for a number of species.

Likewise, these suggestions could also be made to pet keepers of birds, reptiles, amphibians, and small mammals that are endemic to the range.

In fact, I honestly see that the species we love to keep from the area and many others can be viable saved through some diligent breeding. It's just that the bigger issue lies in the higher methane production potential of the dam than compared to Sao Paulo's emissions, the fact that about 40,000 people will be displaced, and that a number of sections in the city of Altamira will be drowned. And none of the effected people look to be getting any real compensation, which makes the humanitarian crisis issue part look even worse than the environmental damage part.

All in all, I'll just say that, rather than writing this off as a dang, hopeless cause, we should just see how this turns out, and do our part in helping the situation.

I posted this here because I thought that the most passionate fishkeepers on the web would take notice, and do something, anything, or at least sign the petition.

Like it has already been said, Many people have known about this for years now. Regardless of your cause coming to this site and acting like a butthead to us is not welcomed. Sure some people may have not known about this but just because they don't post in your thread doesn't mean they are not trying to help.

I don't think large scale dams have ever panned out in the long run. Just look at how the California damns have really messed with salmon populations. We eat salmon, we needs food to live energy is a luxury. Just saying gotta respect the hierarchy of needs.

There is a thing called internet etiquette and the OP kinda F'd that. Evangelizing your cause in such a fashion only dissuades people from it, FYI. As a humble college educated individual we expect you to know this.
