  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Very cool little guys!

great mini monsters. very nice, beautiful colors. makes me want to pull mine out of their pond and put them in a tank to see what they actually look like. they're not much to look at from above.

Thanks everyone! I appreciate your comments.

My male was fairly bright orange too! How the heck did you get the young on non-live food though? I had only one of my many babies go off live food, and got the female on market shrimp. What do you feed the fry?
wonword, do you still have any belonesox? Any pics of your male?
both my adults are still on live feeders, but I had no problem getting the babies onto non-live foods. The day they were born, they had big bellies full of yolk, and were not interested in eating. The second day, I threw in as many newborn mollies/platies/guppies as I could find, and the babies quickly ate them all. One of the belonesox ate its sibling (I don't know how it could fit something that big in its stomach! ) I had no more live feeders for them, and wanted to stop any further cannibalism, so I started just throwing in every type of food I had lying around. A few of the babies took frozen bloodworms, and by day 3, I had all of them gorging on bloodworms, as long as I used a dropper to make the worms wiggle a bit. On day 4, I got some freeze-dried bloodworms to try. The fry went nuts over it, and now will not even touch frozen bloodworms. Every time I walk past, they all swarm to the front of the tank to see if food is coming :D
I will try to get a video of this within the next couple days--it is a lot of fun to watch them get so excited over food. As a result, they get fed at least 3-4 times a day and are growing rapidly. I am still working on getting them onto flakes or pellets...
I just can't believe how much fun these guys are--I am having a blast with them.

Very cool--I am jealous of all your outdoor tanks/ponds! Any pics of your belonesox setup?

awesome work. I've never heard of belonesox fry being weaned onto dry food before congrats. Hope that color passes on to the next generation. I haven't seen any red ones in my experience either. Belonesox variant "red" would be a lucrative fish to propogate if it breeds true. Congrats on all

Cool, thanks! I really hope the color breeds true. I will also try to get some better pics of the male when he is fully colored up! Seeing what has been done with other livebearers through selective breeding, seems like this species could have a lot of potential...

Look into Micropoecilia picta. It's a livebearer closely related to the guppy. Anyway, in the wild, about 1 in 500 has a specific gene that causes the male to be red, as opposed to the usual grey.

Normal _______________Red

It would be really cool if these belonesox had some similar gene complex. The first domestic red pictas were selling off at the hundreds per pair (the price has since come down). Color+rarity+ability to wean the fry onto dry =money. haha. Good luck.

Thanks very much for the info! It will be really interesting to see how these babies turn out as they grow. I hope the color does turn out to be genetic, but I guess we will see...
