Best algae eater

Nerite snails supposedly make excellent algae eaters.

Though I would suggest just cutting back on lighting, not overfeeding, and keeping up with large water changes to reduce/eliminate algae. This works for me, and I rarely, if ever, have to use a scraper to keep the glass clean.

Nerite Snails will eat everything in the tank (including the occasional sponge filter), they get very large & breed very quickly, even when kept alone....

assuming one is going to get an algae eater, it is a good idea to research which ones eat which algaes. an SAE or a Flagfish are not going to eat the same algaes as a bushynose pleco or otocinclus might, and there are some things - - like diatoms/cyanobacteria - - that none of them are going to like

personally, I like to keep algae eating fish because I like watching them; I keep SAEs, otos, bushynose and clown plecos, etc., and I think my tanks are more interesting because of them.

just keep in mind that whatever you get, they will also contribute to your tank's bio-load, and they may need supplemental feeding beyond just tank algae

I think that is the best answer yet. I have lots of algae eating fish. They do get shrimp pellets and what not, not just algae. Be it otos, SAE,CAE, hillsteam loaches, etc

get a bunch of ramshorns. but if you say you are having brown algae, it sounds like a diatom bloom. increase WC and try to reduce nitrates/phosphates. all these things combined should help
I think it is too. This tank has been set since about July. I did a 50% WC yesterday and scrubbed most everything except the gravel. Should I scrub the gravel, too?

I don't advocate use of fish to clean algae for you. In my opinion, I'd use the algae scraper or toothbrush.

Is an algae scraper a fancy word for just something to scrape? hehe if so I've scrubbed the algae off for 3 weeks or so and kept coming back. Yesterday as I said I scrubbed everything with my sponge, toothbrush and hand (except gravel). If it comes back... gravel it is.

Will changing the filter help at all? :irked:

though as of now.. things look good. Then again its just day 1 after WC lol
