Best algae wafer??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I use Hikari tropical and drop one in once a week at night. I never had a problem but they do make your filter alittle dirty i noticed. I only have one 5 inch pleco. Usually you will have enough algae in your tank

thanks for reply but that is not true about the algae. plecos need to be fed their diet in nature consists of very little algae. mostly vegetable matter and aquatic plant leaces and in some species wood. i was just wondering if one wafer was superior to the rest.

What do you mean by best? Do you want a wafer for an herbivorous pleco, or a more carnivorous one? If the former, Hikari is a good one. I myself prefer NLS, New Life Spectrum, as the garlic is an appetite stimulant, and the primary ingredient is krill and fish meal, not just fish meal, though I have primarily carnivorous plecos. I know some people object to Hikari having wheat meal and germ being the second and third ingredient. Something I plan to try is spirulina sticks, which would maybe be better for the more herbivorous plecos. They are cheaper in bulk than Hikari, and have a higher concentration of algae and plant material.

I prefer the new life spectrum h20 stable wafer. It is shapes like an algae disc and sinks. They do not disintegrate in water at all... They soften and bottom dwellers can slowly feed on them. It has a great amount of different sources of vegetable matter and high quality protein.
I really love that they don't fall apart in the water. I used to feed hikari, but those fall apart and foul your water quickly. And aren't near the quality of NLS IMO.

What about these Algea waffers and vegetable discs? Even though the first ingredient on the vegetable discs is fish meal...

I have used these algae wafers for years. I have a package in my hand right now and want to point out the ingredients list for the algae wafers is VERY different from the vegetable discs. Its not bolded so it doesn't stand out, but it's listed first. These are a large "leaf shaped" wafer. I would not recommend them for a small pleco. I feed them to a pair of 18" plecos, 3 20" pacus and a 20 tilapia. They eat these and the NLS water stable wafers on alternating days. With such big fish I go through a LOT of food, so I appreciate the bulk prices.

The ingredients list is:
Spirulina Algae, alfalfa meal, pea powder, soy flour, wheat flour, fish meal, shrimp meal, brown rice flour, wheat starch, fish oil wheat germ, carrot powder, spinach powder, kelp meal, brewers yeast, glycerin, soy bean oil etc....

I use the NLS for the smaller plecos in the house.

I switched from hikari waffers to hbh algae grazers years ago due to the higher algae/vegetarian content in hbh.
I keep royal plecos (panaques) only, hikari waffers and nls h20 have protein as their main ingrediant, not recommended for vegetarian plecos.

new lifes spectrum h20 stable wafers or any one of the sinking new life spectrum formulas. they are all similar and all include plenty of fruits and veggies along with protein sources. best food out there period imo.
