best bang for the buck

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ya that price is way high for a 110. In my experience penguins are good but there is zero room for media and the whole idea of the bio wheels is not that great,if the 110 is to pricey for you get the 70 Still much better than the penguin, of course all of this is IMO.

$122 for an ac110 is nuts. Can be had for $79 all day long

Still don't think they out compete two 400s though. The emperors can hold a very high amount of media if you are creative. I use the grey plastic basket to hold my filter pad and place it in the back slot. Then the remaining room can hold bio. Or just set up two stages of mech.

I set up mine full of bio max. The grey treys slots are room enough to run side by side pieces. The emperors can hold alot of bio, with or without the wheels.

Or like you said double up mech. They are pretty versatile filters actually.

I would have rated Emperor the best bang for the buck if not because I do not like the spray bar and biowheel features. Emperor 400 has huge pumping rate and media capacity, second only to AC110. For Penquin, I can run them without the biowheel. For Emperor, I do not have the option as the spray bar must be installed or else water will spray all over.

I got an emperor 280 with a used tank that was missing the spray bar and bio wheel, so I just plugged the hole with a tightly rolled up strip of filter floss and it blocked off the flow

The Aqua Clear AC-110 is by far the bang for the buck IMO. I have two AC500's which are the previous version of the 110 for 12 years now hanging on the back of my two 90 gallon tanks along with two Fluval 406's. The AC's move a lot of water, are easy to maintain and just like a Timex watch they take a licking and keep on ticking.;)

I have one ac500 that's 8+ years old and still going strong, no gaskets or anything ever replaced!

Ac110 is same thing just different media packaging.like

Hagen & eheim are the best in the industry imo

I also have 5 400s that are 5 years old no service and three more that I got used 5 years ago that were old then. They were the first design and still run just as good as ever. There is lots of dependable equipment out there. And that's great for us. I have a 4 year old xp3 as well. Never done anything to it other that clean it. What it comes down to is the product that fits your application best and knowing what products are quality.

I have 6 xps. 3 are easily 4-5 years old. Ive swapped out the oring out on 2 just because. Maintenance on these is a breeze for a canister. I've replaced almost all my cans for sumps, but it still run my xps.

About $100 on Amazon right now.

After you blogged the spray bar hole, will it generate too much flow to quickly by pass the filter media. HOBs can pump a lot of water, but don't have large enough filter media to match, so more flow is not always better.
